For Destination: College alum Brandon White, returning to Mount Vernon as an educational leader is more than a career milestone. It is a long-awaited homecoming nearly two decades in the making—and the realization of a dream rooted in the community that helped shape him.

Brandon recently began an exciting new chapter as Assistant Principal at Lincoln Elementary School in Mount Vernon, New York. For someone who grew up as a Mount Vernon Knight playing basketball in his hometown, the opportunity to return and serve the next generation of students carries special meaning.

“Returning to Mount Vernon is truly a full-circle moment,” Brandon says. “I am living my dream.”

From Mount Vernon to Higher Education—and Back Home

Brandon graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 2010 and went on to build an impressive academic foundation. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Economics from Buffalo State University, followed by a master’s degree in Childhood Special Education from Lehman College and an Advanced Certificate in Educational Administration from The College of Saint Rose.

Today, Brandon is continuing that journey as a PhD student at SUNY Albany, where he is pursuing a doctorate in Educational Administration and Policy with a concentration in Educational Policy. His research interests include advanced human resources policy, artificial intelligence governance, and AI literacy in K–12 public schools—areas that sit at the intersection of educational leadership, technology, and the future of public education.

But Brandon’s path to becoming an educator and administrator was not always a straight line.

Early in his career, he spent 11 months working at AllianceBernstein, a global investment-management firm. At the same time, he remained deeply connected to his hometown, working as a youth counselor and basketball coach in Mount Vernon.

It was through mentoring young people that Brandon began to recognize where his true passion lay.

Helping young people see their own potential—and believe in the greatness within themselves—gave Brandon a sense of purpose that ultimately inspired him to transition from investment management into education. He also thought back to the coaches, educators, administrators, and role models who had influenced him while growing up in Mount Vernon. Many of his basketball coaches were themselves educators and school leaders.

Their example showed him the profound impact mentors and role models can have on a young person’s life.

The Destination: College Connection

Destination: College has supported Brandon throughout his journey, from his early years in Mount Vernon through his academic and professional accomplishments.

“I am incredibly grateful for the support Mrs. McKenna and Destination: College have provided me throughout the past 20 years, beginning when I was a young Mount Vernon Knight playing basketball in my hometown,” Brandon says.

For Brandon, that support went far beyond preparing for college. Destination: College helped surround him with people who saw his potential and encouraged him to pursue it.

“Destination: College connected me with an incredible network of people who believed in me, nurtured my talents, and opened doors that helped shape my professional journey.”

That journey has now brought Brandon back to the very community where it began.

As Assistant Principal at Lincoln Elementary School, he has the opportunity to become for Mount Vernon students what so many coaches, educators, mentors, and supporters were for him: someone who recognizes their potential, encourages their ambitions, and reminds them of what they are capable of achieving.

“Nothing But Greatness Comes From Mount Vernon”

Brandon’s ambitions extend well beyond his newest title. His long-term goal is to become an Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources, where he hopes to empower and support educators, strengthen school communities, and create the conditions for both students and staff to reach their full potential.

As he works toward that goal, Brandon continues to expand his expertise alongside his doctoral studies. He is currently completing Cornell University’s ILR School Labor Leadership Skills Certificate Program, with a focus on union leadership, negotiations, labor relations, and effective communication.

And at the heart of that vision is an unwavering belief in Mount Vernon and its young people.

As a teacher, Brandon developed a daily tradition with his students. Now, as an administrator, he continues to carry its message with him. He asks students to affirm and repeat out loud:

“Nothing but greatness comes from Mount Vernon!”

For Brandon, those words are much more than a saying.

“Greatness truly lives in Mount Vernon and lives within each and every one of our young people.”

It is a message that perfectly captures Brandon’s own journey—from a Mount Vernon Knight, to college student, economist, mentor, teacher, doctoral student, and now school administrator.

Along the way, the community that believed in Brandon helped him recognize his own greatness. Today, he has returned home to help a new generation discover theirs.

When he isn’t working with students, supporting educators, or pursuing his doctorate, Brandon is learning to play golf and continues to enjoy following the financial markets and economy—keeping one foot connected to the field where his professional career first began.

Destination: College could not be prouder to celebrate Brandon White and this remarkable new chapter. His story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when talent meets opportunity, mentorship, education, and a deep commitment to giving back.

Congratulations, Brandon. We can’t wait to see the greatness you continue to inspire in Mount Vernon and beyond.
